New Eurostat\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/-\/DDN-20201006-2?inheritRedirect=true&amp;redirect=%2Feurostat%2Fnews%2Fwhats-new\">data<\/a>\u00a0shows one in three workers are always or often working under time pressure, a major cause of stress.<\/p>\n<p>But since the lockdown, the United Nations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unric.org\/en\/concerns-are-raised-over-the-threat-of-covid-19-to-mental-health-in-europe\/\">says<\/a>\u00a0stress levels in Europe have \u201crisen substantially.\u201d People working from home are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etuc.org\/en\/pressrelease\/lockdown-shows-urgent-need-workers-have-right-disconnect\">twice as likely<\/a>\u00a0to work over 48 hours and more likely to suffer repeatedly interrupted sleep.<\/p>\n<p>On the UN\u2019s World Mental Health Day, unions are launching the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.endstress.eu\/\">EndStress.EU<\/a>\u00a0campaign to secure an EU directive to tackle the growing problem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it\u2019s time to tackle work-related stress in Europe:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 51% of EU workers say stress is common in their workplace<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The cost of depression due to work is estimated at 617 billion euros per year<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurofound.europa.eu\/data\/covid-19\/working-teleworking\">quarter<\/a>\u00a0of workers say they feel emotionally drained by work during lockdown<\/p>\n<p>The directive is needed because the EU\u2019s own research shows that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/visualisation.osha.europa.eu\/esener#!\/en\/survey\/detailpage-european-bar-chart\/2019\/drivers-and-barriers\/en_1\/E3Q262_1\/activity-sector\/14\/11\">89% of employers<\/a>\u00a0say that the main reason they manage <a href=\"https:\/\/bruxelles.unionsyndicale.eu\/en\/?s=work+stress&amp;lang=en\">occupational health and safety<\/a> is because of legislations. But only a handful of members states have legislation on work-related stress and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/visualisation.osha.europa.eu\/esener#!\/en\/survey\/detailpage-european-bar-chart\/2019\/emerging-risks-and-their-management\/en_1\/E3Q300\/activity-sector\/14\/11\">just a third<\/a>\u00a0of workplaces have an action plan to prevent work-related stress.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign is led by the ETUC and Eurocadres, a trade union representing professionals and managers, and is supported by Mental Health Europe as well as over 20 national trade unions. MEPs from the S&amp;D and Green\/EFA groups in the European Parliament are also taking part in the campaign launch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eurocadres President Martin Jefflen said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c4 in 5 managers express concern about stress at work. Managers, our members, need better tools and good legislation can help in creating work organisations which support mental health at work in the EU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a separate directive to address the stress at work epidemic, like there are for many physical risks. Health and safety laws can be incredibly efficient. But for psychosocial risks the current EU legal framework from 1989 is not good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOVID-19 is still among us and with companies trying to restart activities a directive on psychosocial risks, violence and harassment and work organisation would really have helped.
