Transfers IN of pension rights

IMPORTANT: Make your requests before 31 December 2023

Those officials and other staff who have acquired pension rights in other pension schemes before joining the Council may request to have those rights transferred to the European Union pension scheme.

The request may be made straight after the probationary period and, at the latest, ten years after joining the service (the GSC).

The parameters/rates for calculating these transfers are updated every five years and the next update will take effect from 1 January 2024. The development in interest rates means that for all requests made after that date the calculation will be less favourable for transfers IN (though more favourable for transfers OUT, where a colleague leaves the EU institutions to work elsewhere – and wishes to transfer his/her rights to his/her new pension scheme).

If you joined the service less then ten years ago and have not yet made a request for a transfer, we would advise you to do so before the end of 2023.

When you receive a proposal (calculation) for the transfer it will then be important to decide, in your particular case, if the transfer would be worth making – you may then decide to transfer your rights or to keep them in the national scheme. But that is for later! The most important thing is to make the request in 2023 as that will be the date used as a basis for the calculation.
